2001: A Space Odyssey (Film Review)

First of all, I want to start by saying that the movie was very boring in my opinion. It had so many moments throughout the film that were left in blank and I as a viewer was left with a sense of not knowing what to do. Don't take this in a wrong manner, I did like the concept of the movie a lot but the film itself caused me to feel drowsy. For example, in the beginning, when it has two minutes of pitch blackness, I was wondering when it would end and would start feeling desperate. I like the idea of the movie as to thinking "what if" a future robot were to malfunction and disobey its maker's commands, how would we get back in control if we were put into Dave's situation with HAL. Dave's situation was a fictional event but if in reality that were to happen I am pretty sure that some would not know what to do and would end up dying. I liked how Dave traveled through light years and it seemed like if he was learning about things no human had ever seen before, such as different planets that have never been discovered and what seemed to be the big bang. But I believe that robots can be a very useful tool to have, as well as being useful they can be expensive and difficult to operate.

  1. Hey Kevin! I liked how you pointed out that you found the idea of the movies as something that draws you to think 'what if?' What if is a question that can make a mind wander and I can see why this movie can do that with all the confusion.

  2. Hey Kevin! I think it's great that the movie left you drowsy due to the sense of not knowing. The fact that you stuck it out and persevered throughout the film just shows how patient you are and your willingness to become open-minded. I agree with you 100% that technology is capable of malfunctioning and disobeying commands although it has been proven to cause no errors. I understand that technology and artificial intelligence could play a great role in society whether it's helping elderly people or assisting the blind, but my gut instinct is that we will become very reliant on this provision, and it will be a detriment to our human species.

  3. Hey Kevin,
I also had the same thought in the begining of the movie. I was actually confused how I heard noise coming from the background, while the screen was all black. The movie could be confusing but in the end the main point is to show how technology advancement can effect human lives. I really enjoyed the movie because it gives you an insight of how things are today or will be someday.

  4. Whats up Kevin, just like you and I was talking about in class this movie was so slow. It had too many long blank parts and was just so bizzarre on scenes. I could totally see that scene where he warped as being related to the big bang! I never thought of it like that. Yes this movie was pretty unrealistic, but just imagine if we have the potential to someday get there. So cool.

  5. Hey Kevin! I thought the movie was really boring as well, I kind of did not want to watch it. The movie was confusing to me as well because of all the different scenes that played. The part that left me really confused was when the screen just stayed all black for a long time.
